Fun Facts
Betula lenta (sweet birch) is a deciduous tree native to southern Ontario and eastern North America. typically grows 15–25 metres tall with a pyramidal to rounded crown and is distinguished by its dark, nearly black bark that breaks into thick plates as it matures.
Unlike white-barked birches, its bark and twigs have a characteristic wintergreen scent when scratched. Sweet birch prefers well-drained, acidic soils and is commonly found in upland hardwood forests. It supports a variety of native insects and provides seeds for birds and small mammals, contributing to forest biodiversity. Best suited to larger properties or restoration plantings in its native range, it is not considered aggressive but requires space to mature fully.
