Fun Facts
Betula alleghaniensis (Yellow Birch) is a long-lived deciduous tree native to Ontario and much of eastern Canada. It typically grows in cool, moist forests and is especially common in mixed hardwood stands, where it can reach heights of 20–30 metres. This species is not aggressive; instead, it establishes slowly and is often found germinating on rotting logs or well-drained forest soils.
Yellow birch provides important habitat and food for wildlife and contributes to forest biodiversity, making it well suited to woodland restoration or large naturalized properties rather than small urban gardens. A distinguishing feature is its shiny yellow-bronze bark, which peels in fine, curly strips.
