Virginia Creeper is a vigorous native vine found in forests, woodland edges, and riverbanks. It has five-part leaves that turn brilliant red in autumn and produces clusters of blue berries. It is a fast-growing vine that can climb walls, fences, trees, and structures using adhesive pads. It does not damage masonry like ivy, but it can overwhelm small shrubs or garden structures if not managed. Annual pruning is often needed to keep it within bounds. It is a highly valuable wildlife plant. Flowers provide nectar for pollinators, while berries feed many birds. Dense growth provides nesting habitat and cover for wildlife. It has beautiful fall colours, and is hardy and adaptable, but not ideal in small gardens due to its propensity to spread.
