Syncamore has ‘camouflage’ bark –an exfoliating outer bark exposing a lighter colour inner bark– makes it easy to recognize and attractive. It is moderately tolerant of shade, and can outcompete willow and cottonwood in the wild. It may work well with early spring seasonal flooding, as it grows in shallow peat bog and along the shores of lakes and rivers; but it prefers wet areas where the later levels drop during the summer. If exposed to more than two weeks of major flooding during the growing season, it will die. Suitable for larger suburban spaces, and used in urban landscaping due to its fast growth rate. It grows a thicker trunk than any other native hardwood - some sources suggest eastern Indigenous peoples use broad sycamore trunks for dug out canoes.
