Pickerelweed is a striking native aquatic perennial with glossy, lance-shaped leaves and upright spikes of violet-blue flowers appearing from midsummer into early fall. It naturally grows in shallow water, marshes, wet meadows, pond margins, and the edges of slow-moving streams. It is especially useful around ponds, rain gardens with permanently wet areas, and naturalized wetland plantings.

Pickerelweed is an excellent choice for pond edges and shallow water, where its roots can remain wet. It can grow in water approximately 10–30 cm (4–12 in.) deep once established. It may spread beyond the area you originally planted it, so give it room. It can be divided in spring. You can also plant it in a large submerged container can help restrict its spread.
