Faits intéressants

Heart-leaved Alexanders is a long-lived perennial with clusters of tiny yellow flowers held above attractive, glossy, heart-shaped leaflets. It is a relatively compact member of the carrot family and is especially useful in prairie gardens, dry to moderately moist borders, woodland edges and naturalized plantings. It is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a native plant that is attractive without becoming overwhelmingly large. Its relatively modest size makes it much easier to incorporate into a home garden. It has a deep root system, which helps it tolerate periods of dryness once established.

The genus name Zizia honours German botanist Johann Baptist Ziz, while aptera means “without wings,” referring to the structure of its fruits. Its developing root system can make established plants more difficult to relocate. Don't mistake its early-season dormancy for a problem. Like many native perennials, it may become less noticeable later in summer after flowering. Plant it among later-blooming species to keep the garden looking full throughout the season.
